Additional info/contents Southwest Overture wurde von der Southwest Junior High School of Gastonia, North Carolina in Gedenken an Johnny Whitesides, in Auftrag gegeben.
Die Arbeit besteht aus 3 Teilen. (Moderato-Andante-Moderato)

Southwest Overture, commissioned by the Southwest Junior High School of Gastonia, North Carolina, in memory of Principal Johnny Whitesides, was written for the Southwest Junior High School Band, Pat Rhoten, conductor.

The work exhibits a standard three-part form (Moderato-Andante-Moderato). A brief introduction forecasts the motif of the Andante. The trumpets introduce the main theme (Moderato), and a woodwind countermelody joins the restatement of the theme(rehearsal letter B). A transition (rehearsal letter C) leads to the Andante. The clarinets present the Andante theme (rehearsal letter D) in counterpoint with the alto saxophones/horn countermelody. This passage is restated (rehearsal letter E) and a second countermelody appears in the woodwinds. A transition (rehearsal letter G) leads back to the main theme. A brief coda follows the restatement of the Moderato.
