Composer Goldman, Edwin Franko
Arranger Lisk, Edward S.
Difficulty level 4
Duration 3:10
Additional info/contents This march contains one of the most famous melodies of all time. It is a true gem in the literature with a classic trio melody where the band sings and then whistles the tune. Edward Lisk expertly preserves this timeless march in this new full-scored edition. Truly a slice of pure Americana!

Performance Notes prepared by Edward S. Lisk:
"On The Mall" should be played at a moderate tempo with a separated style throughout. Articulation clarity and dynamic contrast will provide the best setting for this march. This particular march is an "audience favorite" as the trio section has a number of players whistling and singing. The singing and whistling parts are indicated in the individual parts.
Trio Section:
Specifically, the first time through the trio section, the flutes, oboes, Eb clarinet, cornets, trumpets, and drums sing: La, la, la, etc. The trombone and euphonium/baritone players also sing except in the places where they have large notes (not cues).
On the repeat, or second time, all Flutes change to Piccolo, stand and play, while the others whistle.
Clarinets 1,2 and 3, alto and bass clarinets, bassoons, saxophones, horns and tuba play both times.
If the march is to be used as a street march and no singing is desired, all players should play the cued notes both times.
In the 1934 Carl Fischer edition of Goldman's Band Betterment publication, he stated: "In the cut time (alia breve) marches, all quarter notes should be played as though they were eighth notes followed by eighth rests, that is — when they are not slurred. All quarter notes, which are not slurred, must be played very staccato. Eighth notes are played like sixteenths. Half notes are held for half the bar and the dotted half notes for three-quarters of the bar. Let the long notes be long and the short ones short. It is this contrast that makes for the snappy and spirited effect. Besides giving the notes their proper values, the marks of expression — little accent, pianos, fortes, and crescendo — should be observed."
As a note of interest and according to researchers, Erik Leidzen and Mahew Lake often arranged much of Edwin Franko Goldman's music. On The Mall was originally arranged by Mahew Lake and then later revised by Leidzen in 1938.

Performance Notes prepared for On The Mall
Prepared by Dr. Christian Wilhjelm, Music Director of the Goldman Memorial Band. The Goldman Memorial Band was founded by Edwin Franko Goldman in 1911 and was conducted by Dr. Goldman until his death in 1956. On the Mall was composed in 1923 to coincide with the band's regular performances on the Mall in Central Park. Similarly to Sousa, Gilmore and others, Dr. Goldman had a manner of performing this march that differed from the published version. This performance tradition of On the Mall has never previously been published or recorded. Trumpeter Sammy Koza who joined the band while Dr. Goldman was the conductor and has performed with the band for 57 years confirmed that the band has played the march in this style as long as he has been a member. (As a student, he heard the band when Del Staigers was the featured cornet soloist!)
On the Mall is played as written for the most part until the Trio, with the exception of two minor details:
1. Measure 27; the cymbal should let it ring on the first beat.
2. Measure 43, beat 2: the trombones and euphoniums should bring out their answer figure and play the downbeat of m. 44 long with a tenuto over the note.
The Trio contains extensive changes that will enhance the effectiveness of this charming tune:
1. First time through the Trio, at m. 58: the euphonium soloist should play only those answer phrases marked "solo." Otherwise, only the tubas and horns and essential percussion play, everyone else sings the melody on "la" with the audience. All of the flute players take piccolos and prepare to play the second strain (to the end of the march).
2. Second time through the Trio at m. 58: the euphonium soloist plays the obbligato part provided. As before the tubas, horns and percussion perform their printed parts. All piccolos stand and play the tunes while all other band members whistle with the audience.
3. On the final strain when the trio melody is played a final time (m. 103) the full band plays for four measures then the entire band sings "la" for four measure (no one plays - no exceptions, with the slight exception that the tubas play the descending line starting on the "and" of one in m. 117). This trading of playing four/singing four continues until the pick-up to m. 127 when the full band plays to the end, but the conductor encourages the audience to sing the last four-measure phrase of the melody.
