Composer Reed, Alfred
Difficulty level 6
Evaluation level of countries A5 (Austrian E level); D5 (German highest level)
Duration 21:30
Additional info/contents This composition was commissioned in 1994 by the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Tokyo on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Because the wind orchestra of this college was invited to the seventh international WASBE conference in July 1995 in Hamamatsu, it was decided to postpone the premiere until July 1995.
The symphony has three parts and a kind of introduction 'Moderately and sustained' leads to the first part, an 'Allegro assai' whose main themes can first be heard in the timpani and the melodic percussion instruments.
The second part, from which the symphony owes its subtitle, is an extended arrangement of one of the oldest Japanese folk songs 'Sakura' (cherry blossom). It is actually a long elegiac melody with free variations in the various sections of the orchestra.
The third movement is a brilliant rondo (Allegro Molto, con fuoco) in which elements of the first and second parts are resumed. This movement leads to a breathtaking conclusion with virtuoso performances by most of the instruments of the ensemble.
The 'Fifth Symphony' (Sakura) was premiered on 26 July 1995 by the Senzoku Gakuen Symphonic Wind Orchestra under the direction of the composer during the seventh international WASBE conference at Hamamatsu.
