Additional info/contents “Eventide Fall” is based on the poem “Abide with me” by Henry Francis Lyte and the melody “Eventide” by the English composer William Henry Monk. The text and music express a request to God to protect people in the approaching dusk and not to leave them alone in the darkness. Henry Francis Lyte set his poem to music while he was on his deathbed with tuberculosis. Working on his lines gave him strength and confidence.

Alfred Bösendorfer drew inspiration from this hymn for his composition “Eventide Fall”. He musically conveys the atmosphere of a church lit by candlelight in the evening. The organist has taken his seat at his instrument and begins with a prelude. A first held note forms the basis for his improvisation. He plays a first motif quietly and later repeats it a note higher. The motif comes from the following chorale, which now sounds in a warm tutti. Tenor horn and baritone repeat it before the high brass takes up the theme, accompanied by a playful counter-voice in the woodwinds. A gently fading Amen cadence ends Alfred Bösendorfer's touching composition.
