The work Arghulesques was dedicated to the clarinet quartet 'Arghul' by the composer Jan Van der Roost, and comprises of three parts. The opening is written in the style of a barcarole, a gondolier's song in 6/8 time. The second part opens with a solo for the 1st clarinet, which is noted senza misura and gives the soloist the possibility of presenting the thematic material as he wishes, later taken up by the other clarinets. The piece comes to an end with a fast part, in which the virtuosity of the player(s) is really put to the test.
