Additional info/contents The work “Babylonian Confusion” describes the story of the Tower of Babel and the confusion of languages.

The piece begins with a rapid upbeat. Fast figures in the woodwinds and massive, low brass notes are meant to express the drive for power and the haste in building the tower. Both the harmonies and the melodies show typical Arabic elements. The sometimes very surprising interjections in the percussion are meant to represent the violence of the rulers and also the oppression of the subordinates during the building of the tower. A dance-like section with flutes and tambourine outlines a brief respite. After that, an ostinato that grows higher and louder describes how the tower gets higher and higher. According to the narrative, the intention was to build a tower with the top reaching the sky. Instead of a final closing chord, however, there is a surprising transition to the next section.

Dissonances and long notes convey uncertainty and foreshadow change. With a tenor saxophone solo and a bordun-like accompaniment, God’s dissatisfaction with humanity’s lust for power and wantonness is expressed. To prevent mankind from continuing to build, God resorts to a drastic means: he confuses their language. The loss of language is symbolized by a collective exhalation of the whole orchestra in a general pause.

The different languages are represented by different, short motifs or melodic fragments, which together make no musical sense. These attempts at communication are belied by the marimba, which plays a recurring, disconcerting motif. The entire section is based on the hexatonic scale. The people finally realize that the lack of a common language makes it impossible to continue building the tower.

A quarrel begins: the motives alternate more rapidly, and rhythm and volume become more intense. Finally, this part ends in chaos, with each musician improvising freely. Gradually, the people find their way back together. Above the final chord, the flute plays a cadenza. This symbolizes the chirping of a bird, which admonishes mankind to pay more attention to nature and mutual respect among people
