Additional info/contents In 2023, I suddenly lost two close friends. I had met them both in important bands I played in, and they were both crucial to my development as a composer. Florent Bonnetain was a conductor and brass player, and Alexandre Comble was a tuba player and director of a music school. Both were incredibly dedicated and moved mountains to realize incredible projects. They always supported their colleagues and young professional musicians in pursuing their dreams.

Therefore, it is only natural that I chose one of Puccini's few chamber music works: Crisantemi. Puccini wrote this elegy for string quartet in a single night after learning of the death of his friend, the Duke of Savoy.

There is no concrete description of the piece; its structure consists of five sections in an arc. One can also hear some other motifs in Puccini's music, such as the three chords (but in a minor key) from Scarpia's Tosca, which always remind me of an inescapable fate.

The piece begins in darkness, with the lowest instruments playing Crisantemi's coda while the trombones quote the work's opening. After a mysterious cluster, the second section begins abruptly with Scarpia's chords. We hear some fanfares that utilize Crisantemi's B section, and I develop this section further with a theme inspired by Puccini's operas (perhaps some of the chord progressions are reminiscent of "E lucevan le stelle" from Tosca).

In the slow middle section, I chose to give the tuba the first solo, playing Crisantemi's second theme. Afterward, following another version by the soprano, a personal theme appears, initially presented as a flugelhorn solo. The slow movement concludes with a reprise of Crisantemi's theme, played by muted brass, building to a dramatic crescendo.

In the slow middle section, I chose to give the tuba the first solo, playing Crisantemi's second theme. The fourth section adopts the same atmosphere as the second, but its tension steadily builds (with dissonances and a kind of polytonal technique). The climax reaches its dramatic expression when the personal theme from the slow movement returns gloriously.

Finally, the last section takes up the idea of the first, but in a bright and peaceful way (the motif initially played by the lower instruments now appears in the higher woodwinds). For it is time to say goodbye. In the final chord, I opted for an ambiguous harmony: the woodwinds play C-sharp minor chords, while the lower instruments play an open fifth between E and B, which can result in an E major chord with an added sixth. I wanted to symbolize that despite our grief, we must continue living without the physical presence of those we have lost. Yet they live on as long as we never stop thinking of them.
