Composer Hosay, James L.
Difficulty level 3+
Duration 7:00
Additional info/contents Jane Campbell Hosay was proud of her Irish roots throughout her life. Her son, the composer James L. Hosay (born in Nashville, Tennessee), fulfilled a long-held wish of his mother with the symphonic work CHRISTMAS IN IRELAND: a composition that focuses on four Irish Christmas carols much cherished and frequently sung by the Hosay family. CHRISTMAS IN IRELAND begins with a pompous fanfare based on motivic fragments of the first carol incorporated: "Once in Royal David's City." It is initially introduced in the lower clarinets and later leads into a beautifully sonorous tutti. For the structure of the second and third carols, Hosay chose a dance form for each. "Carol of the Birds" is presented as a moderate dance in 4/4 time, with a march-like character. It is rustic and driven by the typical Irish drum, the bodhrán (or alternatively, a tom-tom). Short solo parts for flute and piccolo are reminiscent of the penny whistle, a simple six-hole flute familiar from Irish folk music. "While Shepherds watched their flocks" appears as a fiery jig. This is a very fast, lively dance in 6/8 time, for which (in addition to the bodhrán) a tambourine is used as a further percussive element. Both dances are deliberately compact and seamlessly integrated by the composer. This creates the impression of a three-part structure for the work (slow – fast – slow). "Wexford Carol" is presented as a moving hymn. Initially introduced by a solo trumpet, it gradually builds to a magnificent tutti, finally culminating in a dreamily delicate conclusion. CHRISTMAS IN IRELAND is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a special musical touch for their Advent or Christmas concert. The regionally typical instruments create an exceptional sound. Furthermore, the symphonic wind orchestra can be augmented with an acoustic guitar, perfecting the impression of a "true Irish Christmas".
