Composer Marenco, Romualdo
Arranger Moncalvo, Andrea
Difficulty level 3
Duration 3:55
Additional info/contents "Ballo Excelsior" is a choreographic performance in six parts and eleven scenes by Luigi Manzotti (Milan, 1835–1905), with music by the Piedmontese composer Romualdo Marenco (Novi Ligure, 1841–Milan, 1907). The ballet depicts the titanic struggle of progress against regression, culminating in the final victory of civilization over reactionism. All concepts are allegorically personified. The principal dancer embodies civilization, followed by light, electrical energy, and other figures, including darkness. Beginning with the Spanish Inquisition, the author traces the history of humanity up to the construction of the Mont Cenis Tunnel, highlighting events such as the abolition of slavery, commemorating historical figures (Volta, Papin, etc.), and celebrating the great works and inventions of humanity (the steamship, the battery, the telegraph, the light bulb, the Suez Canal), until the final apotheosis under the sign of the brotherhood of peoples.

From this grand ballet, Andrea Moncalvo chose the most famous piece, the gallop, which appears in the second scene of the first act and features light and civilization as its main characters. The arrangement, also suitable for small wind orchestras, particularly those lacking horns and trombones, is based on the manuscript preserved in the library of Novi Ligure (Alessandria), Marenco's birthplace.
