Composer Hodel, Stephan
Difficulty level 4
Duration 12:00
Additional info/contents Composed between 2020 and 2022 for the Vaud Cantonal Brass Band Association for the 2023 Cantonal Music Festival in Gimel.
The work consists of four sections, which are closely linked in terms of motifs and themes.
At the beginning, a relatively free, atmospheric prologue, which presents the most important themes and motifs, mostly in their inversion. You don't really know where the musical journey is going.
A brilliant introduction at bar 48 suddenly tears us out of this dream world, presents the motifs in their original form and brings the work to a first climax (75).
The third part is again followed by atmospheric sounds, which finally lead to the fragmentary presentation of a song-like melody. This melody gradually develops further, becomes a chorale and finally culminates in organ-like chords, the second climax of the work (153).
A short transition leads to the fourth and final part (159). The already familiar motifs now take on a light-hearted, dance-like character. The atmospheric and heaviness of the first three parts are now replaced by the lightness of samba rhythms, supported by percussion instruments. Now things move relatively quickly, followed by the third and final climax (262), before the work comes to a magnificent end with a final quotation of the main motif.
The work is not based on any extra-musical program. It reflects the events surrounding the Corona crisis between 2020 and 2022. Public life came to a standstill, basic rights were restricted, and a de facto professional ban for musicians was introduced - not an easy situation. In order not to completely succumb to madness, I had imposed a strict regime on myself during this time, which consisted of meditation, composing, a long walk, and self-study of languages. This became my ‘modus operandi’, which helped me to survive the crisis relatively unscathed psychologically.
