Additional info/contents	SW-Grad Orchestra: 3+ Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Variations on a Theme by Glinka" is a work for solo oboe with wind orchestra accompaniment that was written in an unusual combination. The composer, who was inspector of the music bands of the naval department in Tsarist Russia at the time of composition, chose Glinka's theme, a folk song melody, for his variations. Rimsky-Korsakov wrote these variations in order to familiarise himself with the virtuoso style and the various aspects of orchestration. The work demonstrates Rimsky-Korsakov's thorough training in orchestration and his extensive experience with various instrumental combinations. It is regrettable that he did not compose more often for wind orchestra, as his three works for military bands show a great understanding of wind orchestras. The present edition of "Variations on a Theme by Glinka" has been adapted for contemporary wind band by adding parts for saxophones and inserting rehearsal numbers for efficient rehearsal work.
