Composer Veit, Gottfried
Difficulty level 3
Additional info/contents Israel is a country in the Middle East bordering the Mediterranean Sea, which is regarded by Jews, Christians and Muslims as the Holy Land of the Bible. The holiest sites are located in Jerusalem. Tel Aviv is not only the metropolis, but in many ways also the centre of Isreal. The local population consists of many ethnic groups and its music reflects this diversity. Classical and contemporary music meets traditional and religious music, not forgetting Arabic music, which has been rooted in this country for centuries. Folk dance is also of particular importance.

The "Little Rhapsody for Wind Orchestra" - entitled ISRAEL by Gottfried Veit - takes original melodies from this country and adapts them to the instrumentation of today's wind orchestra. After a short introduction in which a fanfare motif with an announcing character is heard in the trumpet register, the entire wind orchestra plays three main sections whose melodies are still known throughout Israel today. In this rhapsody, they are labelled "Hymn", "The Great Caravan" and "Dance Song". While the "Hymn" demonstrates the full splendour of the wind orchestra's sound, "The Great Caravan" begins with an ostinato of the congas over which only two instrumental solo parts (oboe and bassoon) are played at the beginning. In the course of this longer section, however, more and more instruments join in and together evoke the monotony of the desert. The final section - the "Dance Song" - also begins with a restrained tempo and instrumentation, but builds up to a brilliant "finale" at the end. As a transition from the "Hymn" to the "Great Caravan", the solo flute plays a short cadenza with a typically oriental character.

The level of difficulty of both the composition and the instrumentation of this work corresponds to the intermediate level of today's wind orchestras.
