Additional info/contents Cleopatra was one of the most famous and influential women of the ancient world. She was born in Egypt in 69 BC and was the last pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt. Cleopatra ruled together with her father Ptolemy XII and later with her brothers Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV. She was not only a political leader but also a skilled diplomat. She used her beauty, intelligence and eloquence to maintain and strengthen her power. She had a close relationship with Julius Caesar, the Roman statesman, and after his death she became the mistress of the Roman general Marcus Antonius.

Her relationship with Marcus Antonius had great political repercussions. Together they planned to create a powerful Roman-Egyptian empire to secure their common interests. However, their plan failed in 31 BC in the naval battle of Actium against the future Roman Emperor Augustus. After her defeat in the battle, Cleopatra retreated to Alexandria. There she allegedly committed suicide by biting her arm with a poisonous snake, an Egyptian cobra. Her death marked the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty and the end of the Egyptian pharaonic empire.

This piece was commissioned by the Orchestre d'Harmonie de la Ville d'Antony from near Paris, conducted by Philippe Rossignol, on the occasion of its 90th anniversary.
