Additional info/contents Eos is the goddess of dawn in Greek mythology. Her appearance every morning marks the beginning of a new day. She emerges with her chariot in the east, and her brother Helios, now called the Sun, follows her with his own chariot. The beauty of the goddess Eos is considered unsurpassed.
The work begins with a night scene. A tawny owl can be heard from afar. Blurring harmonies convey darkness and uncertainty. The main melody begins chorally, representing the incipient reddish light of the goddess Eos. Suddenly, the first rays of sunlight hit the land. Rising lines are accompanied by fanfare-like brass interjections. Finally the sun appears. This is expressed by a powerful forte from the entire orchestra.
The morning begins with a steady pulse accompanied by birdsong and fragments of the Eos melody heard earlier. Suddenly, new rhythmic melodies are added, describing the awakening of life. Next, the entire Eos melody is heard again; then the music calms down again. The dawn gradually disappears. Now hecticness sets in again and the pulsating life is expressed with many rhythmic shifts and a rapid change of harmonies. The piece ends in a powerful, fast-paced conclusion.
