Composer Vaughan Williams, Ralph
Additional info/contents Toccata Marciale was composed in 1924 and premiered by the band of the Royal Military School of Music in the same year at Wembley Stadium in London. Although largely ignored in Great Britain (Frederick Fennell relates that Vaughan Williams was "surprised and seemed pleased that anybody in the U.S. knew of it, since it had been pretty well ignored in England"), Toccata Marciale, along with the composer's Folk Song Suite, are considered to be not only important contributions by Vaughan Williams to the modern band's repertoire, but a standard upon which later band compositions were measured. In spite of the fact that his band works are few in comparison to his other compositions, there is no doubt that Vaughan Williams' influence in the band world continues to be significant.
