Additional info/contents Brass quintet no.1 is subtitled "The Addict". It represents 3 aspects of an addicts life:
I Personality
II Getting high
III Withdrawal.

1st. movement: inner conflict. The motive (tpt 1, m. 2) is always to be played very insistently as a primal energy. The motive (tpt 2, m.16-17) is like the conscious mind trying to cover or contain this energy. The glissando in measure 33 is to be played as a wild ripping through the overtones.

2nd. movement: getting high. As a response to the rhythmic intensity of the 1st. movement the 2nd movement is to be played in a laid back fashion. The 6/8 is always changing between 2 and 3. This should be smooth and flowing so that the affect is more wave like and not a strict now it's 2 and now it's 3.

3rd. movement: withdrawal. 5am. the affect of the drug has worn off. The theme (m. 1-13) should be played in a wild frantic manner. Out of control. A feeling of urgent need. The motive (tpt 1, m. 15-16) is like the feeling of ants crawling under the skin. The 2nd. melody (hrn, m. 35-36) is the mind desperately trying to get these 2 melodies under control. The rest of the movement unfolds with this conflict.
