Additional info/contents In 1864, the music publisher Schott in Mainz, which still exists today, published "Soldatenleben. Ein Tonbild" for piano, which he is said to have composed in 1857 - during his time as Austrian military bandmaster. In 1867 he transcribed it for orchestra, and in 1874 it appeared as "Soldatenleben (Retraite autrichienne). Militärisches Tonbild" for orchestra. Various other instrumentations followed in the later 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century.

Military tone pictures, which idealised the life of a soldier, were very popular in the past, and thus numerous performances of "Soldier's Life" can be traced - solely on the basis of information in the contemporary daily press.
The main central motif is the military signal of the "taps" ("Retraite"). Afterwards, "Des Kriegers Liebesständchen" serves as a lyrical counterpart. The "Retraite March", which begins with the traditional "Einschlagen", is again determined by the taps motif. This is followed by the "Gebet vor der Schlacht" ("Father I call you!") by Friedrich Heinrich Himmel from 1813, which also belongs to the military service music of the Danube monarchy. A fast finale in two-four time concludes this interesting work.
