Additional info/contents Parzival was one of the most important knights at the court of King Arthur, not only because of his unusual career, but above all because of his role in the search for the Holy Grail. Numerous important authors of the Middle Ages dealt with this topic, including Chrétien de Troyes (Perceval, c. 1150) and Wolfram von Eschenbach (Parzifal, c. 1200).

Parzival, raised by his mother in the forest solitude, is an outsider at Arthur's court. He doesn't know the strict rules according to which courtly life has to be governed, he doesn't know anything about human coexistence and even less about chivalry and its ideals. He considers the first knights he meets to be angels in his folly, then leaves his mother in solitude to become a knight. He meets the Red Knight, kills him without honour, takes his armour from him, arrives at the royal court and thinks he is a knight. The learning process will be slow and painful, until he will be allowed to use this honorary title rightly.

Like most other Arthurian knights, Parzival eventually goes in search of the Holy Grail. Only very few of them get close, but Parzival is even invited to the Castle of the Holy Grail, where he is allowed to watch a procession in which veiled virgins carry a light-veiled, obviously sacred object past the sick King of the Holy Grail. But even though Parzival has already become a true knight in many things, he lacks the nobility and spiritual maturity to ask the decisive compassionate question, and so he is expelled from the castle again and the Fisher King remains unredeemed. Only another wandering through the world will make Parzival worthy and his second visit to Carbonek Castle finally redeems Amfortas and makes Parzival the new guardian of the Grail Castle.
