Additional info/contents The Alps are an elementary and characteristic part of Central Europe. Kurt Gäble was inspired by this impressive natural spectacle to write his work "Sound of the Alps". As the subtitle announces, this composition focuses primarily on "Impressions - Traditions - Visions" that are related to the Alps. The impressions are at the beginning of the work and start with a motif depicting lively pulsating water. The Alps, like all mountains in the world, are an important water reservoir. This water motif can be heard almost continuously in the background, for water is the basis for life and is therefore present everywhere. In bar 5, one of the main themes of the composition is introduced, which Kurt Gäble calls the "Alpine motif". It is first heard in the horns and is then reinforced by the trumpets. Delicate sounds play around this powerful motif - as a symbol for the many nuances of the Alps, which can only be experienced on a gentle approach. The unique flora and fauna of the wonderful Alpine wonderland reveal themselves to those who take their time and treat them with care. With this musical element, Kurt Gäble wants to point out that we must protect and preserve such a precious asset. There follows a brief pause in bar 17, first in the brass, then the woodwinds join in. We let the mighty and impressive atmosphere of the Alps take effect on us and try to process and reflect on these impressions. The water theme is clearly audible here again. At bar 36, we once again encounter the Alpine motif of the beginning, whereupon in bar 48 the view opens up to the vastness and size of the mountain massif. The music develops steadily and leads to bar 86, ever finer and more delicate in sound, to the traditions. These begin with a musical theme in the woodwinds that symbolises light and sun, like a radiant confession to the homeland. In each region, depending on the location, climate and vegetation, its own traditions have developed. And traditions are also what connect these regions with each other. One example is the alphorn, which used to be used for communication from alp to alp, from village to village. In keeping with this tradition, an alphorn yodel is heard at bar 94, which is gradually accompanied more and more by cowbell ringing. This sound belongs unmistakably to the atmosphere of the Alpine world. As freely as the bell of each cow sounds, so freely should the bells be played in the composition. In bar 104, the motif of the alphorns changes to a polka song in 2/4 time. This traditional folk dance also connects the different regions of the Alpine country with each other, and in each region its own little peculiarities have developed. An abrupt change then surprises us at bar 142. Suddenly, other, new influences affect the traditional sound. Everything becomes faster, more powerful, more impetuous. The fast-paced postlude dominates this part. This is where the visions come into play: the young generation reflects on its roots, seeks access to the traditions - but it does so in its own, modern, fresh way. It is a young approach to traditions, marked by appreciation for the past and their own roots, and at the same time full of new inspiration and openness for the future. This gives rise to a new and unique sense of home and tradition. Musically, this is evident in bar 182, where the Alpine motif of the beginning is heard again - but now in a varied form that combines old and new sounds. "Sound of the Alps" finds a radiant ending that celebrates traditions and visions in equal measure.
