Additional info/contents The introduction of the euro in 2002 gave rise to this Christmas composition, which takes us on a musical tour of Europe with a selection of European Christmas carols. Fragments of the well-known ‘Joy to the world’ by G. F. Händel form the introduction. The round trip through Europe begins with the stylised carol ‘Away in a manger’ in England. In contrast, the light-footed, playful Spanish Christmas carol ‘Fum, fum, fum’ takes us to the Iberian Peninsula. The probably best-known Christmas carol ‘Silent Night’ takes us to Austria and Germany. Of course, it is only natural to take a short detour to the Czech Republic (EU member state candidate) with the well-known ‘Zither-Carol’. We are fascinated by the interesting and striking changes of time signature. With ‘God rest you merry gentlemen’, the musical journey continues via England to France. There we celebrate Christmas with the songs ‘Il est né le devin Enfant’ and ‘Angels from the realms of Glory’, which also comes from France. A few short motifs and quotations from well-known Christmas carols form the transition to a brilliant finale with ‘Adeste Fidelis’.
