Der Text ist eine Übersetzung des mittelalterlichen „Dies est laetitiae“, das vor allem in der dreistimmigen Version des Glogauer Liederbuches (ca. 1480) Verbreitung erlangte. Die deutsche Fassung fand sowohl im katholischen wie im protestantischen Raum Eingang.
