Additional info/contents "Variations on a Melody by Adriaen Valerius": Philip Sparke discovered the melody he used in Valerius Variations in a collection by the 16th century Dutch poet and artist Adriaen Valerius. In Valerius' collection it belonged to a song about the Dutch War of Independence with Spain, Valerius himself cites a song called Comediantendans as the source and it was probably previously sung by English sailors. Philip Sparke continued the eventful history of this melody, which has obviously been popular for centuries, with this series of variations.
