Additional info/contents	"Evolution" was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the fourth division of the Dutch National Brass Band Championship (NBK) 2011. The dedication is to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI) in Arnhem (Holland), in recognition of their extraordinary efforts to develop the brass band repertoire. The composer about his work: The idea for this piece came to me while reading an article about a direction in Chinese philosophy called Wu Xing for short, which cannot be translated literally, but means five elements, five phases or five stages of transformation. This principle occupies a central position in all Chinese thought, whether in science, medicine or astrology. Simply put, it establishes different cyclical relationships between five elements in all areas of life. For example: earth - metal - water - wood - fire - (earth) - etc. In this cycle the earth contains metal, which liquefies when heated (water); water makes trees grow, whose wood burns (fire) and becomes ash (earth), thus starting the cycle all over again. I was particularly interested in the cycle of feelings: Meditation - sadness - fear - anger - joy - (meditation) etc. I thought that this cycle could be an effective emotional "journey" through a piece of music. Consequently, Evolution consists of five equal sections that roughly trace this cycle of feelings. I have tried to let the music grow organically with as few repetitions as possible.
