Composer Ferrabosco, Alfonso 1572-1628
Arranger Howarth, Elgar
Additional info/contents The English keyboard fantasia reached its peak of popularity in the late 16th and early 17th century. The music was normally based on a short musical extract that was embellished and developed. Often the music formed variations on the hexachord (a series of six notes which ascend step by step) in a polyphonic manner with a free and improvisatory nature. Ensemble fantasias gradually diminished in popularity up to around 1700, but their keyboard counterparts retained their importance.

Arranger Elgar Howarth idiomatically transfers the original to the brilliant sonorities of modern brass instruments.
