Additional info/contents The cherry blossoming Sakura is an annual Japanese highlight marking the beginning of spring. Starting in mid-March, the blooming wanders from the South of the country up to the Northeast. Nearly half of all deciduous trees in Japanese cities are cherry trees, which create an ocean of white and pink petals. People all over Japan celebrate the ten days of cherry blossom.

“Sakura Variations” by Kees Vlak is based on the Japanese folk tune “Sakura, Sakura”. The introduction presents a first motif as the main theme. The following Sakura-song should be played staccato (shortly) and leggiero (lightly). The first variation is called “Clowns” and in addition to the main theme there is a second theme in 3/4 time. Combining both themes creates some exciting dissonances. The second variation describes a “Sleeping Dragon” making a lot of noise snoring loudly. Here the cymbal rolls are very important. The third variation brings the joyful atmosphere of a “Dance” as people meet in the evening under the blooming cherry trees, having picnics and celebrating, singing and dancing. This wonderful festivity brings Kees Vlak’s impressions of Japan and the cherry blossom “Sakura” to a cheerful conclusion.
