Additional info/contents This new edition is based on the first edition published by Durand in 1881. The editions by David Whitwell (1979) and Timothy Reynish / Bruce Parry (1995) were also used.

Obvious printing errors in the first edition have been corrected. The editors have made a few minor modifications concerning agogic and dynamics which serve practical purposes.

For the part in A-flat major (bars 72 - 134), a slower time measure (poco meno mosso) was chosen, with a preceding "poco ritardando". An additional ritardando was notated at bar 125. The ambiguously defined "poco a poco crescendo e stringendo" from bar 231 onwards was transferred to tempo I at bar 296 (when the first theme is resumed), with a preceding ritardando.
In order to make the fugal entries from bar 184 onwards appear clearly, the counterpoint was downgraded somewhat dynamically.

The original instrumentation of the wind version included the following instruments:

Piccolo
Clarinet in E flat
1st/2nd clarinet in B flat
Oboe
Alto saxophone
Tenor saxophone
Baritone saxophone

Cornets in Bb
1st/2nd/3rd/4th trumpet in E flat
1st/2nd/3rd trombone

Saxhorn / Flugelhorn in Eb
1st/2nd flugelhorn in Bb
1st/2nd/3rd saxhorn / alto horn in E flat
Baritone in Bb
Euphonium in Bb
Tuba in E flat
Tuba in Bb

Triangle
Cymbal
Snare drum
Bass drum
Tam Tam

The instrumentation of the present edition has been adapted to today's standard wind band instrumentation and supplemented by bass clarinet, bassoon and double bass.
