Additional info/contents In transcribing this orchestral work for a five-part ensemble of like instruments, the editors attempted to bring out the essential structural elements. Such an endeavor can lead to greater transparency, by comparison with the original setting, and thus to a deeper understanding. For practical reasons our arrangement is a third lower than the original key of D. For performances with trumpets, a piccolo trumpet is not required for the upper part, although we have made room for such a possibility by avoiding low notes.

Clarinetists might have a problem with the frequent repeated eighth notes, which can be executed only with double-tonguing. We have therefore provided a simplification by ossia indications where such passages exist in too great profusion. Brass players with lazy tongues might also welcome such simplifications! Hornists are free to transpose the work into a feasible key, for example by reading from the separate parts as if they had been notated for horns in F: Trombonists should play the work an octave lower.
