Additional info/contents The Battle of Varlar took place in 1454 in the area around the town of Coesfeld. Rob Goorhuis' musical aerial view of the historical events begins with a hymn for the inauguration of a chapel, then trumpets and trombones announce the impending battle. In the ensuing turmoil, the rattling of sabres and the wailing of the wounded can be heard before the glorious victory is celebrated with the anthem from the opening section.
This overture was written in 1997 as a commission by the De Bildt (nl) municipality on the occassion of the 800 years anniversary of its German sister-town Coesfeld (de),to which the work was subsequently presented as a gift on its completion.
