Composer Brade, William
Arranger Thomas, Bernard

The remarkable set of variations for violin by William Brade (1560 -1630) has survived in a manuscript in the University Library in Uppsala (Sweden). Although we know that the composer was an exceptionally famous violin player, the present work is the only to show real virtuosity . A slight complication is that Variations 4 and 5 occur, with a few variants, attributed to a certain Cornelius van Schmelt in the Division Violin, Containing a Choice Collection of Divisions for the Treble Violin, published by Henry Playford in London in 1688. This obviously casts a little doubt on Brade's autorship. However, although no other solo violin works by Brade have survived, it is known that Johann Schop was one of his pupils, and the variations for violin by Schop included in the Dutch collection T'Uitnement Kabinet (1646) are quite similar in style to our Coral and Variations. It is, of course, possible that van Schmelt was another pupil of Brade.
