Brief description |
Alan Hovhaness Chakmakjian, one of America's most prolific and original composers, has written over 400 works, including more than 60 symphonies. He studied piano with Adelaide Proctor and Heinrich Gebhard, and composition with Frederick Converse at the New England Conservatory. Later, he was awarded two honorary doctorates (from the University of Rochester and from Bates College) and two composition fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation. He spent a year in India on a Fulbright scholarship and then has a Rockefeller grant for musical research in Japan and Korea. His spiritual teacher was Hermon DiGiovanno, a Greek mystic painter. In 1943, DiGiovanno guided him into the ancient world of Armenia, Greece, Egypt and India. Hovhaness destroyed nearly all his early music and trained an amateur string ensemble to play his new music introducing, in 1944, his "Oriental Aleatory" or "Spirit Murmur" which became widely imitated in 1959 and 1960. Later Masatoro Togi, a great Gagaku musician of Japan, became his teacher who taught him to play ancient Japanese music and instruments. Performing piano on this CD is Wayne Johnson. |
