Wie 'Seasons', ist es dem Wisconsin Brass Quintet gewidmet, das auch die Urauffürung spielte. 'Fabrics' (viersätzig) ist inspiriert worden von den zahlreichen, wunderschön handgestickten Decken der Mutter des Komponisten. Der Titel bezieht sich auf die vielen Farben und Klänge, die ein Blechbläserquintett erzeugen kann. Wie immer in John Stevens Werken ist es wichtiger, in jedem Statz eine besondere Stimmung zu schaffen, als einfach nur technische Lösungen zu bieten. Jeder Satz wurde nach einem traditionellen amerikanischen Stickmuster benannt. Der erste, 'Morning Star' [Morgenstern], schildert die friedliche Morgenröte. 'Sunshine and Shadow' [Sonne und Schaten] ist, wie man es sich vorstellen kann, eine Kontraststudie. Effekte werden erzielt durch verschiedene Instrumentations- und Orchestrations-Kombinationen. Es werden auch Piccolo-Trompeten eingesetzt und die tieferen Blechblasinstrumente spielen oft in ihrem extrem tiefen Register. Im dritten Satz, 'Delectable Mountains', helfen die Flügelhörner zur Schaffung von dunklen, reichhaltigen und majestätischen Klangfarben. 'Fabrics' for brass quintet was composed in the summer of 1989. Like 'Seasons', it was written for the Wisconsin Brass Quintet, premiered by that group, and supported by funding from the University of Wisconsin Graduate School. Also a four movement work, 'Frabrics' was inspired by the many beautiful handmade quilts made over the years by Mr. Stevens' mother. The title refers to the many colors and weaves of sound of which the brass quintet is capable. Once again, the setting of a mood is of primary importance in these movements, rather than any particular technical compositional devices. Each movement is titled after a traditional American quilt pattern. The first, 'Morning Star', reflects the quiet, but shimmering dawn of day. 'Sunshine and Shadow', is, as one might expect, a study in contrast. This is accomplished largely through instrumentation and orchestration - piccolo trumpets are used and the three lower brass are often in their extreme lower registers. Flugelhorns are used in the third movement, 'Delectable Mountains', aidong to create a dark, rich, majestic sound. 'Flying Geese', the title of the last movement, is a pattern that is seen on or around many early American quilts. The suggestion of strength and speed is portrayed in this rapid, brassy finale. 'Fabrics' pour quintette de cuivres a été écrit durant l'été 1989. 'Sunshine and Shadow' [soleil et ombre] est, comme on peut se l'imaginer, une étude de contrastes. Les effets sont obtenus principalement grâce à des combinaisons d'instrumentation. On y requiert des trompettes piccolo tandis que les trois cuivres graves jouent au fond de leurs tessitures. Les bugles, dans le troisième mouvement 'Delectable Mountains', contribuent à créer des sonorités sombres, riches et majestueuses. 'Flying Geese' [vols d'oies] est un motif que l'on retrouve très souvent dans les broderies américaines. L'image de la puissance et de la vitesse est traduite par un final rapide et 'cuivré'.
