Early in 1972, Lewis van Haney (trombone at New York Philharmonic during the years 1940-50 and professor of many famous trombone performers and educators) aprroached me about writing a multi-movement work for bass trombone and piano in memory of three renowned low-brass virtuoso performers. Tetra Ergon is the product of that idea. The memorial movements are dedicated to William Bell, tuba, affectionately named 'the boss', Emory Remington 'the chief' and Dorothy 'Dottie' Ziegler, both trombone players. I have as well dedicated a movement to Lewis van Haney.
