Es sollte ein Concertino für solo Trompete sein, in welchem sich die zahlreichen musikalischen und emotionalen Aspekte des Instrumentes entfalten, in zugänglich und zuhörerfreundlichem Stil. Das Stück sollte eine Serie von Passagen werden, miteinander durch ein einziges Motiv verbunden, welches in diesem einsätzigen Werk vielen Umwandlungen ausgesetzt wird. Ich war von der Idee fasziniert, die Solotrompete gegen eine ungewöhnliche Orchestration antreten zu lassen: vier Hörner, Pauken und kompletter Streicherkörper. 'Passages' bedeutet nebst der musikalischen Definition auch Reise von einem Ort zu einem andern, oder Übergang von einer Gemütsverfassung in eine andere. Ich wollte ein Werk schreiben, das durch viele solcher Veränderungen führt; eine musikalische Reise mit ähnlichen und dennoch sehr unterschiedlichen Abenteur. First, I wanted to write a concertino for solo trumpet that would display many different musical and emotional aspects of the instrument in a fairly accessible and listener-friendly style. The piece would be a series of 'passages' linked together by a single motivic idea, which would undergo many transformations within the single-movement work. I also was fascinated with the idea of pitting the solo trumpet against an unusual orchestration of four French horns, tympani, and a full body of strings. The word 'passages' has another meaning beyond the musical definition: a journey or transition from one place or one state of mind to another. It was my hope to write a work which progresses through many such states; a musical voyage in which one encounters a series of related yet widely varied adventures. Je désirais écrire un Concertino pour trompette solo où les multiples aspects musicaux et émotionnels de l'instrument se développent dans un style accessible et plaisant. La pièce, en un seul mouvement, devait se composer d'une série de passages reliés par un motif unique, mais soumis à de nombreuses métamorphoses. J'ai été fasciné par l'idée de laisser la trompette solo affronter une orchestration inhabituelle: quatre cors, timbales et un orchestre à cordes complet. 'Passages' signifie aussi, hors la définition musicale, voyage d'un endroit à un autre ou transition d'un état d'âme à un autre.
