Das Werk ist einsätzig, in drei Hauptteile unterteilt - langsam, lyrisch / schnell, energisch / langsam, ausblendend. Es ist ein zeitgenössisches, virtuoses Werk mit einer breiten Palette von Farben und Timbres im Solopart, in den lyrischen wie auch den sehr rhythmischen Passagen. Der vorliegende Klavierauszug der Orchesterpartitur kann je nach Bedarf vom Pianisten noch vereinfacht werden. Roger Steptoe dankt dem Schweizer Hornisten Bruno Schneider für seine Unterstützung und seine Hilfe zur Herausgabe des Werkes. This Ballade for horn and chamber orchestra is the first of an on-going series of ‘mini-concertos' for a solo instrument, each lasting around 12 minutes and using a classical Mozart-type orchestra. The work is in one continuous movement but divided into three main sections – slow and lyrical, fast and energetic, slow and conclusive. Despite its length it should be considered to be a contemporary virtuosic work displaying a wide variety of colours and timbres of the solo horn and heard in passages of intense lyricism and also rhythmic dexterity. This piano version is a literal reduction from the orchestral score and the pianist can simplify the accompaniment as necessary. The composer is indebted to the distinguished Swiss horn player, Bruno Schneider, for his encouragement in writing and editing this work La Ballade pour cor est le premier d'une série de 'mini concertos' pour soliste, d'une durée d'environ douze minutes avec accompagnement d'un orchestre de chambre classique. Cette oeuvre est écrite en un mouvement divisé en trois parties – lent et lyrique, rapide et énergique, lent et conclusif. Contemporaine et virtuose, cette ballade présente une variété de couleurs et de timbres que l'on peut entendre aussi bien dans les passages lyriques que dans les passages rapides. La partie de piano est une réduction littérale de la partition orchestrale et le pianiste peut simplifier l'accompagnement si nécessaire.
