Additional info/contents	Der Gründer des The Brass Press Verlags (1999 von Editions Bim übernommen) bat mich eine neues Werk für Trompete allein zu schreiben. So entstand 'Cascades', das 1981 allen Mitgliedern der ITG (International Trumpet Guild) als Beilage ihrer Zeitschrift offeriert wurde. Die zwei ersten Takte dieses Stückes bestehen aus einem Motiv das ich zum Spass spielte als ich noch zur Schule ging. Drei Grundgedanken strukturieren das Werk: die eckige und intervallmässige Ouvertüre, die Fingergriffkombinationen mit überkreuzten Akzenten und der Cantabile-Teil. Diese drei Ideen werden entwickelt und kommen im ganzen Stück immer wieder vor. 'Cascades' ist inspiriert von den Wasserfällen und den wunderschönen, steilen, felsigen Bergen im hohen Pazifik-Nordwesten von Amerika. Als Trompeter kann ich musikalische Linien erforschen, die quasi unmöglich auf Papier zu notieren, aber faszinierend zu spielen sind. Diese vorliegende Edition enthält neue Angaben, die meine musikalischen Absichten verdeutlichen und gleichzeitig einige Schnaufpausen anbieten. Mir ging es aber nie darum, Schwierigkeiten nur als solche zusammenzustellen. Zur gleichen Epoche habe ich 20 andere, sehr interessante und sehr schwierige Etüden geschrieben, die in einem Band vereint sind: 'Advanced Etudes' (Editions Bim/ The Brass Press, ref. TP182) Allen Vizzutti, November 2009, Mercer Island, WA, USA The founder of The Brass Press (publishing company acquiered in 1999 by Editions Bim), Steven Glover, originally approached me about writing a new unaccompanied piece for trumpet. 'Cascades' was the result. The piece was a gift to all International Trumpet Guild members as a supplement to the ITG Journal in 1981. The opening 2 bars of the piece present a motif I used to play for fun in high school. Compositionally there are 3 basic ideas presented, the angular and intervallic opening, the valve pattern / cross accent 16th note phrases and the cantabile section. The 3 ideas are developed and recapitulate throughout. As a trumpet player I was able to explore and present musical lines in the piece that appear nearly impossible on paper but prove to be quite playable and exciting. This current edition contains new markings that more clearly indicate my musical intentions as well as suggesting resting points. It was never my objective to present a piece that is difficult for the sake of being difficult. Originally I thought fewer markings would encourage individual interpretation of the music, which I highly encourage. Over time it became obvious that more information on the page would be of help to most performers, hence the new editorial information. The name, 'Cascades' comes from both the visual picture of water sliding down a rock escarpment and from the magnificent mountains of the same name visible out my window here in the great American Pacific Northwest. I composed 20 other etudes in the same time period that are also very interesting and very difficult. They are published in a collection called 'Advanced Etudes' (Editions Bim/ The Brass Press, ref. Il en résultat 'Cascades' offert en 1981 à tous les membres de l'International Trumpet Guild comme supplément de l'ITG Journal. Les deux premières mesures de cette pièce présentent un motif que je jouais pour m'amuser du temps où j'étais au collège. Trois idées de base cadrent la composition: l'ouverture angulaire et jeu d'intervalles, les combinaisons de doigtés / accents croisés sur doubles-croches et la partie cantabile. Ces trois idées sont développées et récapitulées tout au long de la pièce. En tant que trompettiste, j'étais en mesure d'explorer et d'offrir des lignes musicales qui sont quasiment impossible à mettre sur papier mais exaltantes à jouer. Cette ré-édition contient de nouvelles indications qui révèlent plus clairement mes intentions musicales et proposent quelques brèves pauses de récupération. Mon objectif n'a jamais été d'écrire un pièce uniquement dans le but d'accumuler des difficultés. A l'origine j'étais convaincu qu'avec peu de directives j'encourageais les initiatives d'interprétations personnelles. Avec le temps, il devint évident qu'un peu plus d'informations seraient utiles à la plupart des interprètes, d'où la nouvelle information éditoriale. 'Cascades' traduit tout à la fois la vision de l'eau qui glisse entre les roches escarpées et les montagnes du même nom visibles de ma fenêtre, ici dans le grand Nord-Ouest Pacifique américain. Durant cette même période, j'ai composé 20 autres études similaires dans l'esprit. Elles sont publiées dans un cahier intitulé 'Advanced Etudes' (Editions Bim/ The Brass Press, réf. TP182).
