Additional info/contents	A Solemn Music was composed in 1949 on commission from the League of Composers for the Goldman Band. It was premiered 1949 in Central Park by the Goldman Band, conducted by Thomson. In 1961, Thomson made an orchestral version for Nadia Boulanger to conduct at the concerts of the New York Philharmonic in February of 1962. It presents a meditation of the death of two of the composer's friends, writer Gertrude Stein and painter Christian Bérard. It is in the form of a twelve-tone passacaglia.
