Das Werk ist 1820 für die Trauerfeierlichkeiten von Charles Ferdinand von Bourbon, Herzog von Berry, entstanden, der beim Verlassen der Pariser Oper einem Anschlag zum Opfer gefallen war. Der regelmässige durchdringende Schlag des Tamtams mit anschliessendem Paukenwirbel, dunkle Klangfarben und schmerzhafte Dissonanzen prägen den Trauermarsch, sodass sich bei Aufführungen eine Kombination mit den beiden Requiem-Vertonungen Cherubinis anbietet.
