Additional info/contents To commemorate the Tyrolean Rebellion in 2009, the Landeck Town Band commissioned Austrian composer Otto M. Schwarz to write a work about the life of the great freedom fighter Andreas Hofer, who led the Tyrolean uprising in several victorious battles in 1809, but was then arrested and taken to Mantua, where he was executed in 1810. Schwarz's concert work, "Mantua," premiered in November 2008 to great acclaim before a sold-out audience. In captivating, cinematic musical imagery, the piece illuminates various stages of the life of the folk hero Hofer, beginning with his final "shot"—his execution in Mantua. "Mantua" is a compelling film set to music, effectively and without heroic pathos, fully doing justice to the subject matter and undoubtedly earning a place in the repertoire of many wind orchestras.
