Additional info/contents
Margaret Brouwer's Quintet was commissioned by clarinetist Daniel Silver and the University of Colorado and first performed by Mr. Silver and the Cavani String Quartet at the Cleveland Institute of Music on November 30, 2005. The work is in four movements (1. Allegro, 2. 'My white tears broken in the seas' (slow movement), 3. Scherzo, 4. Moderato, Vivace), and reflects Brouwer's strong feelings about the dangerous turmoil in the world today. The first movement, assertive and ferocious, is a departure for the composer, and contrasts effectively with the dreamy, improvisational character of the slow movement, with its hints of middle-eastern cantillation. The scherzo is breezy and the final movement returns to the bristling energy and sternness of the 1st movement. The 20-minute Quintet is a major statement by a masterful composer operating at the height of her powers.
