Additional info/contents This work by István Bogár is one of the Hungarian pieces for wind orchestra that has enjoyed great international success in recent decades. It was commissioned by the Hungarian Radio and its first performance took place in 1982. The magnificently orchestrated work successfully combines the musical language of the 20th century with the ancient elements dictated by the theme. An example of this is the ancient Greek, asymmetrical rhythm in the first movement, "Thessaloniki". The second movement takes us to an astonishing geological wonder, the meteors, and the third movement paints a picture of the Delphi dancers. In the fourth part ("Athens"), the form used is already announced in the title: it immortalizes the contrasting unity of the several thousand year old Acropolis and its surroundings, loud with bouzouki music ("Plaka"). In the suite, the composer masterfully exploits the instrumentation possibilities offered by the wind orchestra. This extraordinarily impressive work can thus become a rewarding concert piece for all ensembles.
