Composer Copland, Aaron
Arranger Lang, Philip J.
Duration 6:30
Additional info/contents In 1938, Copland wrote the first of his Wild West ballets, "Billy the Kid", for the American Ballet Caravan.
The inspiration for the ballet was Walter Noble Burn's best-seller "The Saga of Billy the Kid", an unusual mix of folklore, fantasy, and historical research about the legendary desperado. Raised in Silver City, New Mexico, Billy is remembered as one of the most notorious characters of the frontier Southwest. An unscrupulous gambler and cattle rustler, he was said to have killed a man for each of his twenty-one years. Fearing that the violent truth of Billy's escapades might overwhelm the production, Copland preferred to describe Billy as "a legendary character, a young innocent who went wrong, part of the picturesque folklore of the Far West, not the monster he was."
