Additional info/contents
Performance Note: Angular themes and bold harmonies pervade the "Blue Ridge Portrait". A fanfare for brass and percussion opens the composition; the disjunct theme is a musical depiction of the peaks and valleys of the majestic mountain landscape and serves as the basic melodic shape of the composition. The opening section builds to a tutti climax (measure 23) and immediately dissolves. A flowing, legato variation of the theme is revealed and repeated; a counter melody accompanies the repetition. A transition interrupts the conclusion of the legato passage and leads to the final section. The return of the opening theme, stated in a blocked polychordal texture, marks the closing section of the composition.
